Gel polish: how long it lasts and how to care for it

Well-applied gel polish lasts about three weeks. Exactly how long is partly up to you.

What shortens it

Hot water and cleaning products soften the gel at the edge of the nail, and that is where cracks start. Nails are not tools — do not open cans and lids with them.

What helps

• Gloves for washing up and cleaning.
• Cuticle oil every evening — dry skin pulls at the gel too.
• Timely removal at the salon — gel that peels off on its own takes a layer of nail with it.

A break for your nails?

If your nails are thin, ask for a strengthening base or have a classic manicure for a week or two between gels.
